What would your walk up song be? Henry

What would your walk up song be? Henry

Her -

For sure would be Jump Around by House of Pain. (That’s the hypiest hype song of all of hype.) I thought, in addition, I would also share some mom walk-up songs that get me through the day.

Preparing a Meal- We are the Champions (of the world …and of dinner.)

Waking up the kids for school- Eye of the Tiger. You are going in for a fight, don’t show weakness or remorse. Oh and also, everyone hates you.

Dropping kids off for the first day of anything - Don’t Cry Out Loud. No, seriously girl- just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings …until you are alone and can break out the wine and baby pictures.

Folding Laundry and matching socks - Another One Bites The Dust. Why? I explain that here.

If I hear someone insult my kids/husband - Mama Said Knock You Out. Can I insult my own family members? Yep, all day. Can you? Sit down, son.

When my mom calls - She Believes in me by Kenny Rodgers. I’m a 45-year-old woman and my mom still thinks everything I do is magic -God bless her. I guess once a mom, always a mom.

Putting on jeans fresh out of the dryer The Twist by Chubby Checker. (I’ll spare you details on that one.)

Driving to any event, on any day, with any number of kids - On the Road Again by Willie. Honestly, I just can’t wait to get on the road again. The life I love is makin’ music with my friends, and I can’t wait to get on the road again.

Getting through a long day - I Will Survive. Gloria Gaynor says it best. As long as I know how to love I know I'm still alive. Some days feel endlessly long - but it’s all for the ones we love the most, and yes, of course, we survive.

Him -

For an unreasonable portion of my life, I wanted to be a major league second baseman. Unfortunately plus defense, average speed and (well) below average size and power isn’t the combination MLB scouts are looking for. Money Ball only goes so far. Oh well. That didn’t stop me from regularly imagining what it would feel like walking up to the batters' box (or occasionally from the bullpen “Wild Thing” Ricky Vaughn style), fans screaming, music pumping, game on the line.

Here’s the thing, this fantasy lasted longer than most major league careers which means the song playing in my mind has changed a few times. Here’s a sampling:

80’s -

Tom Sawyer - Rush

Jump - Van Halen

Welcome To The Jungle - Guns and Roses

90’s -

Enter Sandman - Metallica (Mariano Rivera didn’t look the part, but he sent it)

Jump Around - House of Pain

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

2000’s

Monster - Kanye West

My Body - Young The Giant

Right Above It - Lil Wayne

BTW, we never stop needing walk-up songs. It may not be the batters' box, but life is about stepping up to the plate over and over again, and a great song can make all of the difference. Whatever you do, don’t look at a third strike…take your cuts!
